The long awaited update is here with some great new features, plus a lot of changes, fixes, and some deprecated items (new templates replacing deprecated templates) to learn about.

Thematic Theme Framework Update - Some New Features:

There's a long list of the items that were fixed in this Thematic Theme Framework update (1.0.1), deprecated, and updated, so we've organized them for you in the downloadable PDF at right, but here are some items we're really excited about.

New Action Hooks to place content, widgets, etc. above the archive loop, and below the archive loop (thanks Kathy) -- see our Guide to help you take advantage of Thematics Hooks and Functions
SEO Plugin Compatibility for the Big Five: All in One SEO Pack, HeadSpace Plugin, Platinum SEO Pack, wpSEO, and WordPress SEO. Personally, we prefer the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast (it's on the supported list)
Support of Custom Post Types and Custom Taxonomies (see PDF)

New Guide: Understanding Thematic Hook and Widget Locations

Learning Track Level: Beginner to Intermediate

This post presents a guide for the overview of Thematic action Hooks, Functions, the Functions.php file, and how you may use them in Thematic Framework Child Themes. Plus, your guide maps out exactly how widgets are located in a child theme. We've noticed that not all designers make use of all widget areas when first learning Thematic because they are unaware of where they occur in layouts. UPDATE 05.30.12: The new version of Thematic has been released and it includes some new Action "Hooks" -- read more in this news post with downloadable guide, and we will be updating our guide(s) soon. ThematicMondo.com is pleased to release our first Guide for Thematic -- a one page PDF geared toward Thematic Beginners - Intermediate level developers. It shows a map of popular action Hook locations, a map of widget locations, plus gives an overview of the structure of a function with action hook in a functions.php file. Now if you understood about 90% of the last sentence... you're ready for the guide, with the following notes:

In addition to mapping out widget locations and locations of popular Thematic hooks, you'll find:
1. The general structure of a function and hook for a functions.php file
2. An example of a real function written to hook into Thematic above the main asides
3. Some advise in the actual aside (zoom in to read in PDF) on common usage

We’ve reviewed leading designs for CMS solutions and business blogs built on the Thematic Theme Framework for WordPress, and are pleased to announce the Thematic Mondo Site Gallery. You’ll find over 60 inspiring examples of sites built on this popular theme framework… and we’re hunting for more.

We took a look at a lot of sites and rated them on visual strength, uniqueness, and good use of the Thematic Framework, and think you’ll find them to be inspirations for your own work. Do you know of any others? If so, please leave your comments here and we’ll take a look.

ThematicMONDO.com Launching for Thematic Community

We’re pleased to announce the beta (still adding content and tweaking the site) launch of ThematicMONDO.com — a site with a mission to support the community of developers and users of the WordPress CMS theme framework — Thematic.

At the date of this post, Thematic is in transition as the original Creator, Ian Stewart has gone to work for Themattic.com, the company behind the WordPress program, and the former lead programmer, Chris Goßmann, is handing off the lead programmer job to Gene Robinson. Learn more about that on our Thematic Rock Stars, Community recognition page. A huge thanks to all three — Ian, Chris, and Gene — and, congratulations Gene.

The Future of Thematic and ThematicMondo.com: We’ll keep you posted about the latest Updates for Thematic and related sites. We’ll give you an overview of Thematic Rock Stars, Resources, Downloads, Community, Child Themes, and Videos. We’ll recognize great contributors. And soon, we will feature some learning tracks for Thematic Beginners, Intermediate Developer (Hacks and Guides), and advanced Coders. So, stay tuned.
